Stop expecting others to be who they’re not: Letting People Be

by Winnie Nantongo

“Let people do what they want to do to make them happy. Mind your own business, and do what you need to do to make you happy.” — Leon Brown

So some people think because we don’t talk about boys or sex we do none!! Oh boy, control your horn. Okay, I’m very much aware of the fact that I’m getting ahead of myself here and I honestly don’t care. But for the sake of my innocent readers, allow me to slow down a bit.

First off,  this writing here is not directed to any special human. This is just me ranting randomly. However, anyone who feels like the cap fits, you are welcome to put it on.

“I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” — Bruce Lee

Often times quite a couple of people  (both boys and girls) think that because someone doesn’t talk about sex, love, politics or any other topic of their interest, it means they are ignorant about it. This is so false and such thinking should stop. Stop under looking people or categorizing people and labeling them for your own sick pleasure. They are not ignorant, you are.

Get this right, If this is my timeline I get to choose what to post for my audience. Now if I chose to do self improvement, I can’t mix it with any other inappropriate conversation. My followers are following me for something else, not anything else and I should respect that. Now for my case, Personal development is my niche and that’s what you will get from me.

Also, the thinking of most people ( mostly Africans living in Africa) that being an LGBTQ+ advocate means you are “not straight” or even that motivational speakers are broken should stop. I don’t know about others but I will again talk for my own case. My views have got nothing to do with my sexual orientation and I believe in self improvement. So I chose self empowerment because I believe that the world can be a much better place if we focus on becoming a person of value so that we can share that same value with others.

That’s just me but I’m sure many others out there have got their own reasons as to why they are using their platforms the way they do. Just like you decided to use yours for spreading hate or even labeling other people.

I know this is a very hard concept for many of you to grasp, but I hate labeling people like we label food or something. We are all being put together in varying stereotypes because of our gender, looks, profession or even simply by the way we appear to others. Stop your judgments and let people be.

I hope when we say ” let people say or do what they want” we are also including activists and feminists talking about racism and sexism, Muslims wearing hijabs, men putting on make up, among others.

Okay, i’m sure that some of you are now wowing as you’re reading this because you probably didn’t expect to hear it from me but hey, did you know that you can be a good person and still tell people to fuck off if needed?

Well, that’s what I have just done.

Looking forward to that day, when everyone can be their true authentic self without being afraid of other people’s judgments, for the day when we will eventually learn to mind our own businesses and make use of the same energy we use to deprive others their experiences to work on ourselves.
