The Struggles of Interracial Dating Today

by Winnie Nantongo

Even though we live in a modern and developed society where even mature singles have managed to hone both their online dating and computer using skills in general, there are still some stigmas and unpopular beliefs we simply can’t shake off. One of them is about Interracial Dating. Millions of people all around the globe are still against these relationships. Unfortunately, this is just one of the many problems interracial couples are facing in 2017.

Here are some of the biggest struggles these people are experiencing nowadays.

Knowing And Respecting Each Other’s Culture Can Be Tough

Different races have different cultures and customs. Being in a relationship with a man or a woman who is not the same race as you can be challenging for this particular reason. You have to learn how to respect your partner’s traditions and this can be incredibly hard, especially for someone who has never been in an interracial relationship. You can make an honest mistake and your partner may resent you for not respecting the culture. Therefore, you need to study your companion’s customs in order to avoid certain uncomfortable situations and fights.

People Think These Relationships Are Purely Sexual

Even when you somehow manage to get past the differences inside your union, it doesn’t mean that the struggle is over. Not by a long shot. Sadly, most people still think that these relationships are based solely on racial fetishes. They refuse to accept any other reason, so they tend to describe them as purely sexual. Of course, fighting these stigmas is exhausting and many interracial couples simply fall apart under pressure.

Constant Fear Of Offending The Partner

Once you hook up with someone with a different color of skin, you start living in constant fear of offending your partner. You don’t plan on hurting them, of course, but there’s a strong possibility for you to do it unintentionally. It’s easy for people to get offended these days. Maybe too easy! Nonetheless, you have to walk on eggshells and that’s not pleasant at all. It’s really hard to be spontaneous and that can slowly destroy the entire relationship.

Meeting The Parents Can Be Extremely Awkward

If you ever been in any kind of relationship, you probably already know how awkward meeting the “folks” can be. Now multiply that with infinity and you get the level of awkwardness we’re talking about here. Your partner’s parents probably think that their child should date someone from their own culture. So, imagine how unpleasant this meeting can possibly be once they discover you “don’t fit the description”.
They’re Going Through A Phase”

It’s incredibly hard to maintain a relationship when everyone around you doesn’t get you seriously. When two people of different races get together, their families and closest friends automatically assume they’re going through some sort of “rebellious phase”. This can be rather frustrating and exhausting because you have to prove them wrong on a daily basis. It puts a lot of pressure on the entire relationship and some lovers are not able to endure it.

Good article. It is good to get a woman’s perspective on this. Most of the time black women feel that a black man inter-racially dating is an insult to all black women. I am glad that you have perspective.
